*** REVIEW AUDIOBOOK *** THE LIAR by Nora Roberts

Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions …

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows—and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning

Shelby Foxworth had everything: a beautiful daughter, a successful husband, a big, beautiful house, and all the fixings, until her husband, Richard, dies in a boating accident. With his death, Shelby is learning that the man she thought she was married to does not exist. Shelby goes back home to Tennessee to the support of her family, while she continues to find out more than she ever wanted to know about Richard. Home is also the place where she meets Griff who can mend her heart.

I didn’t get too far into The Liar before I thought, “this book was inspired by that Dateline show.” It is so sad to find out that you gave up everything important in your life for a lie. Every time Shelby turns around, she finds out about a new, horrible lie that her husband told her. I love how she is welcomed home with open arms, after a little family scolding of course.

I love the characters in this story. Shelby and Griff are a good match. I must root for them. Griff moves their relationship slowly while building her up emotionally. Nora Roberts has a real talent for creating and developing secondary characters. Shelby’s family is a hoot. I love every one of them and want to bring them home with me. Her brother, Forrest Pomeroy, is a local cop. He helps her with some of the problems that continually pop up. He is a protector and openly loves his sister.

I knew what to expect, but it didn’t spoil the story for me as I needed to know how Nora put her twist on the events. Another skill Nora Roberts has is picking the perfect narrator for her books. January LaVoy is a new narrator for me. She does an excellent job and makes a good story better. I will look for her in the future when I’m getting audiobooks.

4 Stars for the story
5 stars for the narrator.
