Larkin Mancinkus prides
herself on making the town of Whynot, North Carolina just a little
sweeter. As owner of Sweet Cakes Bakery, Larkin gets all the town gossip
– the sugar, the spice, and the everything not so nice. So when she
finds herself on the tip of everyone’s tongue thanks to an encounter
with a mysterious and handsome stranger, she learns the true meaning of
‘if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.’
Deacon
Locke has spent his life traveling the world with no particular
destination in mind. But when he rolls into Whynot on his Harley, he
just knows there is something different about this town. What he doesn’t
know is that out of all the places he’s traveled and all the people
he’s met, the gorgeous bakery owner might just entice him to put down
some solid roots.
Come on down to see what’s cookin’ between Larkin and Deacon!
This
is the perfect book for my state of mind today. It pulled me right out
of my funk and gave me some good laughs and feel good moments.
Gimme
Some Sugar is the final book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series by
Juliette Poe (a.k.a. Sawyer Bennett). We are back in Whynot (a real
town), North Carolina with Larkin Mancinkus drooling over the hot biker
guy Deacon Locke. Larkin is a southern belle. Larkin and her family are
long-time residents with a lot of influence in Whynot. She loves her
home and her family. Larkin started her bakery, Sweet Cakes, here, and
can’t imagine living any other place in the world.
Deacon Locke
is the exact opposite. He is a traveling man. After he left the Marines,
his life is traveling around the country on his motorcycle. He does
some government contract work when something appeals to him. He doesn’t
have close ties with his family and can’t imagine settling down ever. He
takes remodeling or carpentry jobs in the towns where he visits until
he is bored then moves on to the next location. These two couldn’t be
more different.
Gimme Some Sugar is a sweet, small town, romance
that touched my heart. I love that Larkin has the figure of a bakery
shop owner instead of perfect in every way. It is a pleasant change when
characters are not the season’s next top model. Deacon is another
story. He is that biker dude that turns women’s heads everywhere he
goes. He is perplexed that he sees something in Larkin that he’s never
experienced before now.
There are some good small-town,
laugh-out-loud moments like the gossip mill. Floyd, the local hardware
store owner, who confronts Deacon with his shot gun the first time he
walks Larkin home. (He must protect the local girl from this drifter
right?). The best scene is in the bed & breakfast Larkin’s sister
owns. There is very little angst, and a lot of good family fun.
Gimme
Some Sugar is just what I needed not only does it complete two reading
challenges for me, but it also made me feel good. Larkin’s close family
is a comfort. The story is a very quick read; it was over way too soon.
I’m sad that this is the end of the series, as I would love to revisit
Whynot and the Mancinkus clan again sometime. A satisfying ending to the
series.
