Raised by a family of survivalists, FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick can take on any challenge—even the hostile reception to her homecoming. But she’s not the only one causing chaos in the rural community of Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. At first believed to be teenage pranks, a series of fires takes a deadly turn with the murder of two sheriff’s deputies. Now, along with Police Chief Truman Daly, Mercy is on the hunt for an arsonist turned killer.
Still shunned by her family and members of the community, Mercy must keep her ear close to the ground to pick up any leads. And it’s not long before she hears rumors of the area’s growing antigovernment militia movement. If the arsonist is among their ranks, Mercy is determined to smoke the culprit out. But when her investigation uncovers a shocking secret, will this hunt for a madman turn into her own trial by fire?
A Merciful Truth is the second book in the
Mercy Kilpatrick series by Kendra Elliott.
Mercy and her FBI team are working with Police Chief Truman Daly and the
Eagle’s Nest police department to solve the murders of two police
officers. Truman is involved because of
a series of arsons that broke out around Eagle’s Nest. In the beginning of his investigation everyone
thought some teenagers were out of control until Truman comes to one site and
it turns deadly.
A Merciful Truth takes the reader on a deadly sequence
of arsons and murders. There doesn’t
appear to be any reason for the crimes. As the town’s teens are questioned. There alibis check out. Something doesn’t fit and more sinister suspects
found.
In addition to a multi-layer police investigation, Mercy and
Truman’s relationship is moving into unfamiliar territory for Mercy. She isn’t sure how much she can trust her
heart to another person. For all her
adult life Mercy is on her own. Still
there is something about Truman that allows her to face her fear. Truman is a gentle and patient man, who
understands Mercy more than she does.
The Kilpatrick’s family dynamic is developing too. Mercy and her sisters are slowly moving back
to the closeness they had as kids. It is
more difficult for Mercy connect with her parents and her brother. I love that she isn’t giving up.
A Merciful Truth is an exciting ride on
several levels, a crime spree with unexpected twists and turns, a romance that
is growing slowly, and the repairing family bonds. I used the whisper-sync option for this
one. I read a little, then listen while
cleaning, and occasionally I did both.
The narrator, Teri Schnaubelt, does an excellent job bring the many emotions of
the characters into play. Her delivery
is entertaining and made me want more.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, not only to see how
Mercy’s relationships progress, but also to get more involved with the crime fighting
and preppers life.
