We all hide from the people around us. Strangers, acquaintances, friends, even family only see the parts of ourselves we want them to see. We conceal the cracks and flaws beneath the polished surface we put on display. Because we think we need to. Because we think people won't like us if they see who we really are. Because our egos demand it.
We hide because we're proud. We hide because we're insecure.
But mostly . . . I hid because I was afraid.

I've been sitting on this review for a while because I'm not sure that I can adequately put into words how I feel about Caulder and his side of the tragedy that was Falling to Pieces. Caulder had completely won me over in FtP, maybe even more so than Kiernan. There was just something about him that pulled on my heartstrings.
Caulder has so much going against him. A terminally ill brother, a father who couldn't deal with it, and the girl that his heart desires is his brothers. He, however sacrifices his own happiness, ignores his own needs to make sure Kiernan has everything he could want in his last days. Caulder is self sacrificing to a fault, he never even thinks about giving into his selfish desires because his world revolves around making things as good as they can possibly be for his brother, his mother and Jade.
While we know how this story ends, there was no way to know how it had affected Caulder and I think that we needed to know his pain to understand his interaction with Jade. To even get a glimpse of what she meant to him and the lengths that he would go to to protect her.
My heart and soul were left aching after I finished this book and Caulder, Kiernan, and Jade's story will always stay with me.
