SYNOPSIS
Their relationship has been exposed, and now their lives are changed forever.
For Cadence Miller, the fast track to adulthood proves intimidating and frustrating. She’s a little girl lost—abandoned by her parents and uncertain of her future. She doesn’t think she “fits” anywhere. She’s eighteen. She wants to be older. And the result is both comical and heartbreaking.
Mark Connelly will do anything to provide Cadence a stable, loving home—to be her protector. But he’s just as broken and lost, and his heart won’t let go of his past so easily. He knows he must share his secret with Cadence. And he hopes his revelation won't tear them apart. He hopes it will draw them closer, and make their love better.
SARAH'S 5-STAR REVIEW
Better is definitely NOT a stand alone. If you have not read Good then you'll be fairly lost in this book.
Mark Connelly just got even more swoon worthy. So in love with him now!
Mark and Cadence are doing everything that they can to just be a normal couple and put the past behind them. That doesn't mean that the pain isn't still there or that they will never have to face the spectres of their respective pasts.
The first thing that they have to deal with is the consequences of Cadences parents knowing about their relationship. As they slog through the fallout, Cadence is able to strike a deal with her father that will keep them all out of any problems with the law. She does, however, lose her parents in the process. When she returns to school she learns that her knew misstep is even worse, in the eyes of her classmates, than her stint in juvie.
After Marks past is revealed Cadence is beyond devastated. She knows that the past is exactly that, but there is so much hurt involved in the revelation of it that she's not sure if she will ever be able to get past any of it.
I am sitting here staring at a blinking cursor wondering how to tell you about this book, because there are just no words for how much I loved it. I greatly enjoyed Good but Better was, well, better. We got to see inside of Mark's head and it provided some much needed insight into why he had made the decisions that he made in Good. I loved him even more for those reasons.
The way that Mark loved Cadence, now that we were able to actually see it, is the way that any girl wants needs to be loved. He never faltered in his pure devotion to Cadence and her happiness. There were several opportunities for him to be degrading and/or hurtful to her, but he never did anything that was anything less than everything he needed. Good lord, Mark is wonderful. If you haven't met him, you NEED to!!
Cadence was even more frustrating in Better than she was in good. There were several times that I just wanted to slap her and yell, 'WAKE UP!!' Now, that's not to say that I didn't understand why she did the stuff she did, it was easy to understand and empathize with her. I was overjoyed when she finally started maturing and realizing that her actions were incredibly hurtful to those around her. She blossomed into quite a wonderful woman by the end of the book!
Summer did an AMAZING job with the conclusion of Cadence and Mark's story. The journey that they went on with dealing with the inevitable issues that would arise from the different points in the life that they are at, as well as the secrets of Mark's past, were dealt with in a way that felt real. It was never a stretch to understand the motivation behind the characters actions. I was able to feel the hurt and pain, as well as the joy and happiness that everyone in the book experienced.
This follow up to good is definitely on my list of books to make my friends read! Not only would I highly endorse these books to anyone who reads about forbidden romance, I'd demand that those people who don't care for it to give it a chance with these books. I loved Good and Better and I LOVE S. Walden!! Thank you, Ms. Walden, for yet another taboo, thought provoking, wonderful story!
