Watch Over Me by Tara Sivec ~ Relaunch ~ Review by Sarah

SYNOPSIS

Addison Snow is your typical teenager. She has a family that loves her, friends that make her laugh, and she's wrapped up in the excitement of graduating high school and going off to college to pursue her dream of becoming an author. When her mother, who also happens to be Addison's best friend, dies unexpectedly, her world comes to a crashing halt.

Death changes everyone...

To make the pain go away, Addison and her father travel down separate, dark paths. She chooses to end her grief forever, while he drowns his sorrows in the bottom of a bottle. How do you learn to live again when the most important person in your life is gone?

Addison struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. Instead of getting back to being the carefree teenager she once was, she's stuck handling all of the responsibilities that should have been her father's. She has no time to grieve, no time for emotions, and no time for happiness...until Zander Reinhardt walks in. All it takes is one little handwritten note on a napkin to kick-start her back to life and help her realize that maybe there's more to that life than pain.

But can it really be that simple? Can she really trust this man who makes her feel alive again for the first time in a year?

Addison and Zander both have secrets they aren't ready to share. When the truth finally comes out, is it enough to tear them apart or has something bigger than themselves always been watching over them, pushing them together, making sure they both get their happily ever after?

SARAH'S 4-STAR REVIEW

This is one of those books that I am not 100% sure how to review. I loved it, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I was expecting the story to start before the death of her mother, so I had to readjust my expectations because of that. Once I came to terms with the fact that I wouldn't learn much about her mom and I would know nearly nothing of her journey with her disease I was in love with the story.

Addison was a VERY broken girl. She didn't just lose her mother the day that she died, she lost her father too. He curled up in the bottom of a bottle and, despite several half-hearted attempts, is still there. Addison was only seventeen and left to take care of her mother's bakery, herself, everything. She, understandably was very depressed and tried to end her life in hopes of being with her mother again.
"I can't do this without you. I hate that you're not here. I hate it so much."
After a failed suicide attempt she goes through the motions of everyday life. Never letting anyone in and never trying to be let in. When the cute guy who always sits in the corner of the bakery starts to leave her napkin notes she wants to be annoyed, but can't be. Then when it seems like he knows her better than anyone else despite the fact he doesn't know her at all, she knows she might have to finally let someone in.
"You can still pick up the pieces, Sugar. They fell apart for a little while, but it doesn't mean anything is damaged. Everything can be fixed. And you don't have to fix it alone. There's always someone who will help you rebuild."
I was immediately drawn to Addison's sadness. Her broken soul called out to mine. I needed for her to learn how to be okay. She was just so closed off. Despite the fact she had a counselor to talk to she really had no one to just listen to her. She needed someone to just be there for her, no strings attached. Enter Zander. He seemed to just always be there when she needed him most. No judging, no pressure, just understanding. He was SO wonderful for her. She started to live again with him. Even when there was an incident that could have very well caused her to spiral into the dark hole of depression she had lived in, he was there to keep her with him. I loved this book and I loved Addison and Zander together. They were pretty adorable, he was just so great with her and dealt with all of her brokeness with amazing grace and understanding.
"I could never, ever stop loving you no matter what. You amaze me, Addison. Your strength amazes me, and the fact that you love me back amazes me."
I think that Tara was able to broach a few fairly difficult and touchy subjects with a grace that few people can. It is something that comes from a understanding of what it is like to be in those places. I am sure, after reading this book, that a piece of her soul lies between those pages. I am thankful that she was able to write this book and share it with the rest of us.
"It's the bumps and the bruises, the pain and the fear; it's messy and it's real and it's not some perfect little story that can be tied up in a bow.  It's exactly what you should write about."
