Interview
What is your favorite candy?
Tangy Taffy or Skittles
How and where you find inspiration for your stories? Did author(s) inspired you to write?
Most of my inspiration comes from real life experiences. A lot of things in the Chocolate Lovers series are true :) And Watch Over Me is about 90% my true story after losing my mother three years ago.
Who is your favorite author? Book?
OMG it's so hard to choose just one! Right now my favorite author is Gillian Flynn. Her books are just total mind f*cks that I can't put down. There's no way I could ever pick a favorite book!
What character in the Chocolate Lovers series are you most like?
Definitely Claire. She is all me from her views on having children to the crazy things that go through her mind.
Who has been your favorite character to write?
It used to be Drew because he's such an idiot and a huge man child. But I introduced a new character in Love and Lists named Tyler. Tyler is definitely my new favorite. He's a douche, but he knows it.
Are any of the characters in your books based on people you know?
Too many to count! My BFF is really named Liz and she is EXACTLY like the Liz in my books. And I think everyone has heard the news that Gavin is modeled 100% after my son.
Where is your favorite place to write?
On my front porch.
I love your funny books but are you going to write more serious books? I loved them too.
I am! I have two more books coming in the Playing With Fire series that will be out by the end of the year and I'm tossing around an idea that's been brewing in my head for a psychological thriler.
Can you see this series (Chocolate Lovers) becoming a movie?
That would be the best day ever! I could totally see it as a rom com. Maybe someday :)
I love baking cupcakes - whats the best cupcake you've ever had?
Pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Oh. My. God. I'm hungry just thinking about it.
If you weren't an author what would you like to be doing?
I'd still be miserable at my old job I had for 14 years at a brokerage firm.
When did you start writing?
I don't really remember a time when I didn't write. I've always written poems and short stories and kept notebooks filled with ideas.
Does each tattoo you have has a meaning?
I have twelve now and all but one have very important meanings. That ONE was my first one. It's a flower on my stomach and it's meaning is "I was 19 and stupid and just wanted a tattoo."
Are all of the kids getting a book or is it just Gavin?
I don't think all of the kids will be getting books because let's face it, that group has a shit ton of kids! Ava and Tyler will definitely be getting a book next. After that, I'll just have to see who speaks to me the most :)
Which character is your favorite and why?
Addison from Watch Over Me. She's sad and she's damaged but she learns how to be strong and live again when everything seems to be falling apart around her.
How do you balance writing and family life?
I don't think I've learned how yet! This is more than a full time job; it's my life and my passion. I'm never NOT working. It usually takes the kids five tries before I actually hear them when they ask me for something. I work all day while they're at school and try to put the laptop & iPad away as soon as they get home until they go to bed. That usually never works, but I try!
What made you choose these specific character names for your novels? Are they sort of code names for people you already know?
Liz is my real life BFF's name so I had to use that. Drew is my son's name which gets a little confusing when I'm talking to a fan! Gavin is the name I always wanted to name our son but hubs vetoed because he knew I was in love with Gavin Rossdale from the band Bush. George (Claire's father) is my dad's name. Everyone else in the rest of my books got their names from a baby naming website LOL!
How long does it take to write a specific scene? Do you keep re writing it until you get it right?
If I have it planned out in my head, not long at all. About 20 - 30 minutes. If I don't have a plan but just an idea, that one scene could take an entire day.
What kind of music do you listen to?
Top 40, alternative, classic rock...pretty much anything but country.
What kind of books do you like to read?
Anything. It all just depends on my mood. If I'm writing and need a break, I always read a completely opposite genre than what I'm writing in to clear my head. When I wrote Chocolate Lovers, I read really dark, depressing, emo books.
Are you going to write more series like the Chocolate Lovers books? We love the humor and can't seem to get enough of your characters.
I have a brand new, 3 book series coming out with Montlake Romance in 2014 called the Fool Me Once series. It's about a group of three best friends who open a private investigations business and everything that can go wrong, does. It's sort of a Stephanie Plum series meets my humor and hot sex :)
Do you know how flippin' funny you are?
I've been told I should do stand-up. I don't think I'm funny, just insane :)
what product would you use if there was a vibrator race being held at your next signing?
I held vibrator races at my book signing in Vegas! And I'll be doing them again in PA next weekend! There's one called Chocolate Thunder that was a fierce competitor. You should Google a picture of it.
what's your favorite position?
All of them. Sex is awesome LOL!
