Blood Lovers is set in JA Huss’ new vampire world. I absolutely
love Syrsee. She is a black witch who was abandoned by the people she
loved from the time she was born. As much as the betrayal hurts her, she
doesn’t lose hope, and there are many opportunities for Syrsee to give
up. I absolutely rooted for her from the minute she appeared in the
story.
Paul is the demon vampire. Thousands of years ago, he was
banished from the European coven because he broke major coven rules. He
was sent to America with two allies, Josep, and Lucia. Paul has several
goals that he started working on when he was banished. The most
important one for him is to get back in the good graces of the European
coven. His hope is that Ryet will play a big role in achieving this
goal.
Ryet is the scion. His job is hunting for Syrsee. Syrsee is
part of Paul’s plan, and Ryet obeys Paul’s commands, albeit
begrudgingly. Ryet suffered terribly after his wife and children were
killed. The tragedy turned him away from good and made it easy for Paul
to bring him onto his team. Paul has a plan for Ryet. Ryet wants to
resist, but the pull of blood is too strong.
What I love most about Julie’s stories, including Blood Lovers,
is that she puts her own twist on her books. If you read about vampires
in the past, you will come to this book with a preconceived idea of
what the characters will be and how they interact among themselves and
with outsiders. Wipe that from your brain before you start reading.
There will be dark characters, unexpected twists, and a super satisfying
resolution. Altogether, this makes for a spellbinding tale that you
won’t be able to put down until the end.
Blood Lovers is a standalone book in the American vampires series.
