You have to stop me from hurting anyone else. I don’t want to do these horrible things. Help me before I’m forced to do it again. And I will do it again because I have no choice. I’ve never had a choice.

In a busy shopping centre, a little girl clutches a teddy bear, clinging to it in the absence of her mother, Katrina. Hours later, Katrina’s body is discovered in an abandoned building. For Detective Kim Stone, it looks like a quick, functional murder. But Kim’s instincts tell her there’s more to this senseless murder than meets the eye. What was the motive for killing a young mother out shopping with her child?

Days later, a second victim is found in a local park, her neck broken just like Katrina’s and her six-year-old son missing.

But with her colleague, Detective Stacey Wood, working on another unsolved crime and a member of the team grieving the loss of a close relative, Kim is struggling to make inroads on what is fast becoming a complex case. And when a handwritten letter from the killer lands on Kim’s desk addressed to her, and pleading for help, she knows time is running out to bring the little boy home alive.

With the support of a handwriting analyst and profiler, Kim and the team begin to get inside the mind of the killer and make a shocking discovery.

Some of the victims have scratch marks on their wrists.

But these are no random scratches. The killer is using them to communicate with someone. The question is… with whom?

And if Kim doesn’t find them soon, another innocent soul will die.

The multi-million-copy bestselling Detective Kim Stone series is every bit as addictive, original and exciting as readers say and you’ll be hooked from the very first page. Nobody does it better than the Queen of Crime, Angela Marsons

Deadly Cry is another well-done, nail-biter from Angela Marsons.  DI Kim Stone is assigned the job of representing the department on a task force to protect a big celebrity.  If you’ve read any books in this series, you know that this is going to rub her the wrong way, so she drags Bryant along.  If she has to suffer so does her partner.

A call to a shopping center where a young girl is stranded, and her mother missing is an answer to Kim’s prayers.  Later the child’s mother is found dead in an abandoned building.  The next day, another mother is found murdered in a similar manner, but this time her child is taken.   The team doesn’t know what to think about the missing boy.  Is the plan to murder him, release him, or something else equally nefarious?  Looking for the boy is equally tense for the team and the reader.

Stacey is working on a rape case that never went to trial. The various police districts share cases that hit a brick wall.  The theory is that a new team may see something that the previous team missed.  The more Stacey follows the clues and talks to the victims she recognizes similarities to another case.  Stacey is tenacious and will not give up until she gets her answers and justice for the victim.

There is so much going on here that I was afraid to blink.  The more clues that are uncovered, the more I thought that there was a connection, but I couldn’t see it.  To me this is the best executed novel in the series, and that is saying something.  As usual the twists were unexpected, and I didn’t pick up the big clue until the end when I thought back to what happened earlier.

Every story in the series, develops the characters.  Stacey is becoming a solid, confident investigator. There is more about Stacey’s wedding plans.  Her partner, Devon is her rock and keeps her grounded when things aren’t going smoothly.  Penn is grieving and trying to stay tough for his brother.  I love every minute with Penn and Jasper.  An ancillary character that we met previously comes back to help Penn.   All in all, there is a lot going on with the team when Kim needs them focused.

I can’t believe that this is the thirteenth book in this series, and it is still as exciting as the first one.  I love working with the team as they follow the clues to solve the crimes.  Once again, Marsons puts in some unique twists that caught me off guard.  I love the banter among the team, especially Kim and Bryant.  Their dialogue often adds a light break to the intense investigation.  I highly recommend this series.

Jan Cramer continues as the narrator for the series.  She does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life.  Her performance puts the reader/listener right in the story feeling all the emotions the characters experience.
