 The Defiant Hero
(Troubleshooters #2)
by Suzanne Brockmann

In The Unsung Hero, award-winning author Suzanne Brockmann dazzled readers with her remarkable cast of tough and tender U.S. Navy SEALs. Now her daring men in uniform return for THE DEFIANT HERO—a thrilling novel of steadfast courage, intimate passions, and the profound risks that are taken in the name of love. . . .

"The United States refuses to negotiate with terrorists." Meg Moore remembered the warning from her job as a translator in a European embassy. Those same words will spell out a death sentence for her daughter and grandmother who have been kidnapped by a lethal group called the Extremists. Meg will do anything to meet their unspeakable demands; anything—even kill—to save her child.

When Navy SEAL Lieutenant, junior grade, John Nilsson is summoned to Washington, D.C., by the FBI to help negotiate a hostage situation, the last person he expects to see holding a foreign ambassador at gunpoint is Meg. He hasn't seen her in years, but he's never forgotten how it feels to hold her in his arms. John could lose his career if he helps her escape. She will lose her life if he doesn't. . . .

The Defiant Hero is primarily Meg Moore and John Nilsson’s story.  Like the hero in the first book, John is a member of SEAL Team 16.  Meg is dealing with terrorists who kidnapped her daughter, Amy and her grandmother, Eve.  She will do everything they ask to save her family, even rejecting the help offered by her friend John.  Meg must use her position with the State Department to kidnap an ambassador for them.  The US government does not negotiate with terrorists, so she believes she must keep the government out.  Her only hope is a semi-partnership with John and appeal to him to assist outside their normal operations.

In addition to Meg and John’s story, there are two sub plots: Eve and Amy trying to outmaneuver the terrorists, and frenemies Alyssa Locke and Sam Starrett, members of SEAL Team 16, attraction.  Eve keeps Amy calm, while entertaining one of the captors with her story of World War II England.

I love this book even though Meg infuriated me through most of the story.  In all fairness to Meg, I could put myself in her shoes.  When kidnappers say don’t go to the police, as they will know, it is difficult to do otherwise.  John Nilsson is an amazing character.  I was on the edge more than once as he tried to help Meg while Meg did her best to push him away.  I understand her decisions in the beginning, but he is a SEAL for goodness’ sake. Snap out of it Meg!

The biggest win of the book is Eve’s storytelling of her time in England during World War II.  It was a beautiful love story, but more than that it is the story of heroism.  Like the first book, it honors the women who served above and beyond without the backing of an official position.  For years women’s contributions during WWII were ignored.  I love that they are honored here.

The other sub plot of Alyssa and Sam was frustrating, sweet, and just enough to build up to wanting more of their story in a future book.  I have high hopes for these two enemies to lovers (hopefully).  I will continue this series for sure.  There are so many smiles, tears, frustrations, and happy moments for me in what I’ve read so far.  I need more immediately.

This second book in The Troubleshooter series is my cup of tea.  I did a whisper/sync read of this book, switching between audio and ebook.  The narrators, Patrick Lawlor , Melanie Ewbank, did an excellent job pulling me into the story and the characters.  I will begin Over The Edge sooner rather than later.
