Setting:  London, England, 1824

Everyone knows that Colin Bridgerton is the most charming man in London. Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend's brother for...well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret...and fears she doesn't know him at all.

Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of everyone's preoccupation with the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can't seem to publish an edition without mentioning him in the first paragraph. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same - especially Penelope Featherington! The girl haunting his dreams. But when he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide...is she his biggest threat - or his promise of a happy ending?

I am at book four in the Bridgertons series.  I started this “buddy read” after watching and loving the Netflix series.  I fell in love with the television characters, and I love the characters even more after reading their story.

The stars of Romancing Mr. Bridgerton are Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.  I will admit upfront that these are my two favorite characters from the first three books and the television show.  Colin is a fun-loving, easy-going kind of guy.  My expectation was a good friend to lovers couple who laugh and love together.  Instead, I got a couple with the woman all in but the man settling for who he knows instead of who he loves.  The sweet, charming member of the Bridgerton family turned into a jealous, unhappy, brooding person a little too often.  Why?

I understand that Colin is at a point in his life that he wants to throw off the coat of an empty-headed charmer.  He is an adult.  He wants people to see him as an adult.  He wants to be his own man and make something of himself.  This is all well and good, but to take such an about face isn’t growth.  It is childish and sometimes mean spirited.

Penelope Featherington stays true to herself for the most part.  Penelope is an intelligent young woman and accepts that she is going to be a spinster.  She doesn’t have a problem with that role at all.  She is making her own plans for her future.  She doesn’t want people to feel sorry for her.  Penelope loves Colin from afar and doesn’t see anyway that he will reciprocate.  When there is a hint that he might love Penelope totally, she loves, supports, and encourages him and his goals.  Sometimes I think it would be better if Penelope stepped away.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that the television show’s reveal of Lady Whistledown spoiled some of the intrigue that other readers enjoyed.  I still love the Bridgertons and this series.  I adore every scene when the family is together.  The banter among the siblings and their friends is often funny and always engaging.  It is just that I wanted to see Colin show his heart and fully embrace Penelope.  Overall, Penelope is the star.  Thanks to Penelope the story is decent, and I’m still hooked on the series.
