Years ago, Naval officer Dax Spencer and NCIS agent Holland Kirk indulged in a steamy affair—until she betrayed him in the wake of his father’s death. Dax tried to put her behind him with a payback of his own. But he never forgot Holland…
Now, as Dax and his fellow Perfect Gentlemen unravel a web of lies, he discovers his family’s tragedy is part of a much larger conspiracy. Soon, all clues point him back to New Orleans…where Holland waits, protecting her deadly secret and holding a torch for the only man she’s ever loved.
Once reunited, they can’t fight the passion flaring hot and wild. But something sinister lurks around every corner, from the elegance of the Garden district to the beauty of the bayou. Dax and Holland may find their way back to each other—if they survive...
Big Easy Temptation is my favorite Perfect Gentleman so far. Everything worked for me. I love the two main characters, Dax Spenser, and Holland Kirk. The romance in the story is captivating from the beginning. Both characters are strong, independent, slightly damaged people. Dax is a naval officer and Holland is an NCIS agent. Dax is interested in Holland and needs her help to clear his father’s name.
The chemistry between Dax and Holland burns up the pages. They are a good team until Holland betrays Dax. She has good reasons for what she does. In her shoes, I would do the same thing. Just the same, I hurt for Dax. He is learning things about his dad he never knew then Holland hurts him deeply. His response to Holland is pretty stupid though. I wanted to shake them both.
The two main characters in this story are the most lovable of the series for me. I connected with them from the start. Their personalities are complex, noble-hearted (for lack of a better word) even with their missteps. As the story moves forward, I found myself thinking of them as friends. Their attempts, well, mostly Holland, to keep love out of the investigation is entertaining to say the least.
The authors do a great job building anticipation and tension. Are they every going to find out the truth about what happened to Dax’s father? How does the scandal and suicide of Admiral Spenser connect with the death of Maddox? Is there going to be collateral damage from this investigation. There is so much going on, and the series story arc is getting more interesting as each book reveals clues and history that ties back to the big mystery.
If you are reading this series, you must read Big Easy Temptation. For me, this is a better all-around story compared to the first two because of the characters. I’m a sucker for second chance romances. Also, there is a good dose of good guys and bad guys, and some surprises. The action moves at a good pace with a decent mix of intrigue mixed in with the romance. The ending is satisfying and sets up Roman and Augustine’s story nicely. I’m ready to see what happens next even though Dax and Holland will stay with me for a while.
