When teenager Sadie Winter
jumps from the roof of her school, her death is ruled as suicide – a
final devastating act from a troubled girl. But then the broken body of a
young boy is discovered at the same school and it’s clear to Detective Kim Stone that these deaths are not tragic accidents.
As
Kim and her team begin to unravel a dark web of secrets, one of the
teachers could hold the key to the truth. Yet just as she is about to
break her silence, she is found dead.
With more children’s
lives at risk, Kim has to consider the unthinkable - whether a fellow
pupil could be responsible for the murders. Investigating the psychology
of children that kill brings the detective into contact with her former
adversary, Dr Alex Thorne – the sociopath who has made it her life’s work to destroy Kim.
Desperate
to catch the killer, Kim finds a link between the recent murders and an
initiation prank that happened at the school decades earlier. But
saving these innocent lives comes at a cost – and one of Kim’s own might
pay the ultimate price.
Kim and Bryant are called to an elite school to investigate the suicide death of a student. The more they interview students and teachers, the more they realize that something isn’t right. No one saw Sadie on the roof. When they go on the roof to look at the crime scene, they recognize that it was not possible for Sadie to jump to her death. Her death is something far more sinister.
Unfortunately, when Kim goes back to the station, Woody advises her to put it down as a suicide. There is pressure coming from the big boss. The pressure does not make sense especially when Keats, the medical examiner, rules that Sadie was beaten to death.
Kim being Kim will not let it rest. When another child is found dead at the school, the investigation gets stickier. The team is appalled that young people are dying and the administration of the school, the parents, and members of the police are trying to cover it up.
Kim Stone is one of my all-time favorite investigators. She has a real gift for reading a crime scene and standing up to anyone who gets in her way. The support characters are a perfect complement to Kim. She is surrounded by a distinctive cast of colleagues who back her up.
Marsons has a real gift for writing mysteries that are brilliantly paced to hold the readers’ attention while building intensity and suspense to a completely gripping and emotional ending that had me holding my breath.
Marsons’ attention of detail and good police procedures makes this a completely believable tale. I could not walk away from the story. This time I listened to the audio performed by Jan Cramer. She does an excellent job adding life and emotion to her voice which brings the story alive. Dying Truth audio is an excellent marriage of outstanding writing and a moving performance. I recommend this book and the entire Kim Stone series to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
