Cadee Hunter comes to High Court Prep campus as a young girl when her father gets a job as groundskeeper.  She knows many of the students on sight, but not personally.  Her parents decide to home school Cadee instead of putting her in with the spoiled, rich kids.  After the death of her parents, life on campus changes for Cadee.  Her father’s death requires a move from a nice cottage to an attic apartment.  When her mother dies, Cadee is afraid that she will lose even that small apartment.  The unexpected offer to attend High  Court College is a shock, but nothing is really free.

Christopher “Cooper” Valcourt is the son of the Chairman of High Court.  Cooper along with his friends Ax and Lars rule the campus, and bully Cadee unmercifully.  On the outside, these three friends appear to have it all.  Looks can be deceiving.  There are many secrets on campus, and Cooper, Ax, and Lars are in the middle of them.  A big secret is the relationship that these three have with Cadee.  Cooper knows that the offer his father makes to Cadee comes with strings.  He cannot share what he knows, but the hazing that she must endure is more bullying.  They want her to admit that she doesn’t belong.  Cadee makes up her mind that she will not be broken.

Bully King is the first book in a duet.  .  It is a given that a JA Huss book is not going to follow a typical path of a bully trope.  Bully King, told from Cadee and Cooper’s point of view, hurts sometimes.  The hate that Cooper has for Cadee does not make sense.  What turned him against her?  Cadee’s willingness to put up with Cooper makes my head swirl.

Dante Legosi another pledge in Cadee’s class has a mysterious background.  How does he fit in the mix and why is he out to destroy Cadee.  Something is going on here.  The friendship among Cooper, Ax, and Lars is hanging by a thread because secrets can destroy.

Julie is one of a handful of authors who never disappoint me.  I know that she is going to take me down a path where I question what she is doing.  I trust her to make it right.  Somehow, she always does.  Even though Bully King is a duet, this first book does not end on a cliffhanger.  Most of the secrets bubble to the top.  I know there must be repercussion for this group because of decisions they all make.  Finding out what they are, and how they recover has me sitting on pins and needles waiting for book two.   I love Julie’s storytelling.  She never disappoints me.
