Her inability to trust people made it hard for her to find a place in the small community until Jessica Lawson moved to town and befriended the shy beauty. But there was one person in Hartwell who tried to befriend Emery long before Jessica arrived…

Jack Devlin has his secrets. One of them is that he fell hard for Emery the moment she appeared in Hartwell. Another is that his father blackmailed him into covering up a dark family tragedy. It forced Jack to sever his relationships to protect the people he cared about. Yet, staying away from Emery has not been easy throughout the years and he hasn’t always succeeded. When Jack’s mixed signals hurt Emery once again, she puts him out of her heart for good.

Until the Devlin family secret is finally revealed, freeing Jack from his father’s machinations. What Jack wants more than anything is to repair his relationships, starting with Emery.

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love Samantha Young and her romance novels and I was super excited to get this latest book, to continue on the journey with these characters we have known from previous books.

Samantha Young writes books that you can emerge yourself with and get lost in, they take you to another world, sometimes the world you wish to escape to and sometimes they relate to aspects of your life or what you have gone through and to me that makes reading and reviewing her books all the more worthwhile.

What I loved the most about Jack and Emery’s story was the fact that you knew this was a long time coming, their love, took a while to get there but it was worth all the heartbreak and sacrifice on both parts to get there.

I must say going back to Bailey’s book, I loved Jack, I was rooting for him to get his own story, there was always something about him that intrigued me so I was super excited when Samantha wrote Jack’s story.

Jack and Emery are just lovely, their characters are people that you probably know, they are just so down to earth but so compelling that makes you want to just bundle them both up and hold on tight to them.

Emery, bookstore owner, (now who wouldn’t want that job?) is shy and one of those girls who will blush at the drop of a hat but she is so endearing to you, you just love her.

Jack, well just is one of those guys who you know bits of but you don’t know it all, he keeps you guessing on his life which is just brilliant.

What I loved the most about this book was the way in which Samantha opens these characters up so you get drawn into everything they are feeling, their wishes, their past and present and makes you understand why Jack is who he is and why he does some of the things he does, the way Emery becomes a different person and why her past played such a role in her life.

You just literally fall in love with these people as if they were real people in your everyday life.
This book is not a straightforward boy meets girl kind of book, in true Samantha form there are twists and turns and so much to take in but boy it is so worth it. This book will compel you to read on and on and late into the night to get to the end of a chapter.

You will not be disappointed. I can guarantee that

If it had been anyone else, I’d have chickened out and walked away. But Jack Devlin gave me the courage to push through my insecurities. He always had. And even though it had led to the kind of hurt I’d been avoiding the last nine years, I slowed to a stop at his side.
He barely turned his head. Just flicked me a look. If he was surprised by my approach, he didn’t say anything.
The turmoil in those blue-gray eyes devastated me.
Jack looked back out at the water and I turned, my hand almost brushing his, to gaze out at the ocean too. I heard his breath shudder a little and fought the urge to throw my arms around him.
I couldn’t give him that. But I could give him this.
I stood with him, watching the sun lower beyond the horizon.
Time passed.
Until there was only a flare of orange and pink where the sea met the sky.
Gathering my courage, I reached for Jack’s hand and clasped it in mine.
He squeezed my hand.
Tight. So tight.
I waited for him to let go.
He took awhile.
But eventually his grip eased.
I brushed my thumb along the top of his hand.
And then I released him.
I knew I didn’t imagine his eyes on my back as I strolled down the beach toward my house.
I always knew when Jack was watching me.
I always had.
