She was my foster sister, her luxurious house the only home I’d ever known. I fell in love with Evie before her doctor parents signed my adoption papers. They threw me out the day they caught us. Now I’m Dr. Jones, so far removed from who I used to be, it seems like a bad dream. I tell myself nothing can touch me. Until I see the residency roster at Rockies University Hospital. There’s only two incoming neurosurgery residents each year. This year it’s Landon Jones—and Evie Rutherford.
Ella James is one of the authors
that I stalk for her next release because she never disappoints me. Fractured Love (Off Limits Series) is
her latest book, and she didn’t let me
down. Fractured Love is a
beautiful story told in Ella James style taking the reader through a myriad of
emotions. The book is laid out in two
parts. Part one is Evie and Landon’s last
year in high school. Part two Evie and
Landon meet again as residents in the same hospital.
The characters are the core of
Ms. James’ stories. Evelyn (Evie)
Rutherford is one of the “cool” kids in school.
Her parents are both doctors who give
back to the community by opening their
home to foster children. When James Landon
comes to their home, they are expecting a
seven-year-old not a seventeen-year-old.
However, after he shows up Mrs.
Rutherford remembers some of Landon’s past and wants to help him. Landon’s life in the foster system
has not been easy and his first day in the new school doesn’t indicate that his
life is going to be any better.
Evie and Landon start as friends
although most of the friendly gestures are from Evie in the beginning. She sees
something special that Landon keeps hidden from most people. The more they get to know each other the
closer Evie and Landon get until young love blooms until the day Evie’s parents
find them together. Landon is sent away, and the two young lovers are separated
for years.
In part two Evie and Landon meet
again as residents. A lot happens to
both Evie and Landon over the ten years they are separated. There are now secrets that they are afraid to
share for fear of breaking them apart again. However, the attraction is still
strong. Before long the appeal can’t be ignored,
and the relationship starts again until all their secrets are revealed.
I am a second chance lover, and Fractured Love is a beautiful second chance romance. In the beginning, we see how teenage love
grows then in part two we see how young love is remembered and grows into an
adult relationship. The two characters
have a lot of baggage as adults but don’t we all.
During my first read through, I
struggle to wrap my head around some of Evie’s decisions. I know she is young.
However, she has a lot of resources; she
doesn’t use any of them. I want
her to lash out at her parents. Some things happen, that Ms. James
explains--kind of--but it doesn’t ring true or real, for me.
My real anger after both readings is with Evie’s parents. They have Landon’s history and treat him so cruelly that it doesn’t line up
with the two people we meet in the beginning.
I yelled at them and put the book down for a couple hours because I didn’t
know how they could redeem themselves. They
don’t as far as I’m concerned.
On my second read through, I forgive
Evie a little. As I thought about it, in
real life everyone doesn’t deal with life’s events the same way I do, Evie made decisions that match what a lot
of young people might do. However, the
more I found out about the senior Rutherford’s in part two, I couldn’t forgive them. The
fact that Evie and Landon easily do doesn’t ring true for me. I do think the first part of the story has
more substance. I want a little more in
part two, but I’m not sure what is
missing—maybe a bit more anger toward the
senior doctors Rutherford. The ending is
sweet but there is something missing. I
want more.
Overall, Fractured Love is a
beautiful love story. Ella James took me
through a lot of emotions with her lovely prose. She shows how people can heal a lot of hurt
and find a way back to their one true love.
I highly recommend Fractured Love. It is a page
turner that I thoroughly enjoy.
