Game of Chance is the first book in Erika Wilde’s Vegas Heat series.  I know I often say how much I don’t like series. However, I’m a big fan of series that takes several books to examine a group of friends, co-workers, etc.  Each book gives an in-depth view of one couple and has a satisfying ending with a promise of more to come.

Game of Chance is a suspenseful look at the dark side of life in Las Vegas.  A very powerful man, Preston Sloane likes young girls.  He is also connected to powerful people and never pays the price for his illegal activities.  Nathan Fox is charged with finding a young girl in Sloane’s clutches before it is too late.  A chance encounter with the beautiful Nicole Hutton gives him an unexpected ally to bring Sloane’s empire to the ground.

The two main characters are my favorite type of characters.  Nathan Fox is a former Marine turned Vegas vice cop, turned Casino security expert with a side job in a covert undercover team.  Each team member has a specialty and Nathan’s is undercover skills.  He hopes that saving this new runaway will be his redemption from a failed operation he had as a vice cop.

Nicole Hutton is a journalist who wants an opportunity to work on a cutting-edge news story.  Unfortunately, her current assignment is to research a speed dating article and other fluff pieces.  While on her speed dating appointment she runs into Nathan who is filling in for a friend.  They hit it off in their seven-minute date because they are both honest about their desire to be anywhere but speed dating.  They meet for a one-time hook-up after the gig and, while sneaking out Nicole accidentally finds information on Nathan’s undercover assignment.  Is this her big break?

Ericka Wilde’s writing is flawless, the plot is different and not the typical romance.  It moves at a perfect pace to keep the reader on edge waiting for the worst and hoping for the best.  I love books with villains that are truly bad guys.  There isn’t any way to like Preston Sloane and, therefore you want Nathan and Nicole to succeed that much more.  The situation Nathan and Nicole are investigating is plausible, and the sleazy lifestyle accurately portrayed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story.  There is the perfect mix of suspense, romance, and drama.  Both main characters are working to recover from past mistakes and regrets.  Nathan finds himself in a position that he might have to save Nicole, a woman he has grown to love.  Will this operation be his biggest failure or his greatest success? I can’t find anything negative to say about Game of Chance.  It hits all my favorite buttons:  great characters, solid plotting and good character and relationship development, nail-biting suspense, and a satisfying ending.  Now I can’t wait for book two, Take A Chance.
