The night I met Drew Jagger, he’d just broken into my new Park Avenue office. I dialed 9-1-1 before proceeding to attack him with my fancy new Krav Maga skills. He quickly restrained me, then chuckled, finding my attempted assault amusing.
Of course, my intruder had to be arrogant. Only, turned out, he wasn’t an intruder at all.
Drew was the rightful occupant of my new office. He’d been on vacation while his posh space was renovated. Which was how a scammer got away with leasing me office space that wasn’t really available for rent. I was swindled out of ten grand.
The next day, after hours at the police station, Drew took pity on me and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. In exchange for answering his phones while his secretary was out, he’d let me stay until I found a new place. I probably should have acted grateful and kept my mouth shut when I overheard the advice he was spewing to his clients. But I couldn’t help giving him a piece of my mind. I never expected my body to react every time we argued. Especially when that was all we seemed to be able to do.
The two of us were complete opposites. Drew was a bitter, angry, gorgeous-as-all-hell, destroyer of relationships. And my job was to help people save their marriages. The only thing the two of us had in common was the space we were sharing. And an attraction that was getting harder to deny by the day.

What
a great story! Egomaniac by Vi Keeland
is one of those stories that grabs your heart and makes you root hard for this
couple with a smile on your face. By the
end, your emotions go from one extreme to
the other starting with what a D to aww I love him so much. I admit that even those times when I think
Drew is a big D his true heart is close
to the surface. It is impossible not to
like this hero.
Egomaniac takes us on a fun
ride with Drew Jagger and Emerie
Rose. Their first meeting is one of the
best first meets. Drew Jagger is a hot
shot, New York, divorce attorney who returns from a trip to find Emerie, a couple’s therapist from Oklahoma,
squatting in his plush Park Avenue office.
Any New Yorker knows you can’t find a big office in New York, let alone
on Park Avenue, for twenty-five hundred
dollars a month. She learns the hard way
that you can’t trust everyone.
Drew
shows his generous side and works out a deal with Emerie, she can help him while his assistant is out and build up
her savings to get another place. This
is where the fun begins. Drew sees the
worst of relationships in his practice.
By the time men become his clients
revenge and anger are spewing all over
the place. Also, his experiences with his Ex rams home the message that
relationships don’t work.
Emerie is on the opposite side of the fence. She is working with couples who want to save
and/or improve their relationships. This
dichotomy sets up some funny scenes that lead
to arguments, pranks, discussions, and eventually, angry sex. Fun times on Park Avenue!
The
ancillary characters are perfect for the story adding insight and depth to the
main characters. Baldwin is the reason Emerie
is in New York. She is pining for him for years now, but the relationship is moving nowhere. In fact, Baldwin flaunts his dish of the
month in her face every chance he gets.
Alexa, the ex-wife, and nemesis is
the character you love to hate and hate her I do. Roman, Drew’s best friend since grade school
is the friend that everyone needs. He is
a player and fun to be around. Oh and
Beck, Drew’s son sets up some of the best scenes in the book. I love this kid. The interaction among these characters shines
a light on the integrity, struggles, and the dreams of the hero and
heroine.
Egomaniac is written in
alternating points of view of Emerie and Drew.
The technique works perfectly to get in their head as they each think
through decisions. After the first
couple chapters, I thought of several possible
scenarios that could drive a wedge through any prospect of a relationship for
these two. I admit I didn’t get it
completely right. That’s a good thing, I
like some surprises. I love how
everything is wrapped up in the end. I’m
going to miss Drew and Emerie. My hope
is that Roman returns in a future book.
I want more of his backstory and a lot of his future.
Ms.
Keeland’s writing is fast paced. There
is never a dull moment. She gives us lots
of laughs, a few cries, a little yelling (me at my Kindle) then it is all comes
together for an ending that is exactly right for this couple. A must read that I will put on my list of
lighter re-readable books. Love it!
