Julie Huss is one of my “drop everything and start reading” authors,
so it is a little disappointing that Taking Turns released right in the
busy part of the semester. It takes a bit longer for me to read a book after twelve to
fourteen hour days L.
Enough complaining and onto the story.
Taking
Turns isn’t what I expected when I first saw some of the
teasers. It is sexy. It is about people involved in a major kinky
lifestyle that is set in a sex club. It
isn’t a book for the faint of heart. If
you like pornographic literature, this is the book
for you, if not go in knowing that missionary sex or typical bedroom sex scenes
in not what you will find here.
In true JA Huss style, the characters are colorful, both strong and weak at the same time, funny,
and endearing. In one of Julie’s EBOS
sections, she tells about her characters and what they mean to her. (This is paraphrasing as I remember her
comments.) The heartbreak is real
because the characters are real. I know
them, I am them. The characters have a lot of baggage, past wounds, and
heartbreak. (That is how I see most of
her characters--so damaged it is hard to imagine someone pulling themselves out
of that abyss.)
As a reader of JA Huss books, I see her characters the same
way. The more I get into each book, the more I know the characters. I see them in my head. I suffer with them. I love them.
Her ability to make her characters real continues with Taking
Turns. It takes me a little
longer to really know these characters and feel their pain than previous Huss
books. There are four important
characters in this story, and it takes a
while to flesh out their uniqueness.
The characters are some of the best I’ve read. Chella
is the main female character in this tale.
She is a mystery through most of the story. She turns up at Turning Point Club, uninvited
and unknown to the owners of the club. Chella
is impersonating a game player who wants to leave the game. Smith Baldwin is a super wealthy--you know
the type more money than God—handsome, hard
ass. My first
impression is a mean as crap, bad guy.
That can’t be further from the truth.
Elias “Bric” Bricman is the owner
of Turning Point Club, a sex club that allows any kink you can imagine. Quin Foster gives the impression that he is the
most loving and understanding member of the trio.
The story is packed with emotional scenes that took my heart on
a ride I didn’t expect. Bric, Quin, and Smith play a polyamorous game with a
woman they pick-up. It is a game they
started years ago. The woman stays until
one of the group ends the game. Each man
has a role to play until the conclusion of the game. Chella wants to play and has a devious plan
to get in the game. Chella also has a secret about why she needs
to play now.
Taking
Turns is written in the alternating points of view of the four main
characters. This technique is utilized
perfectly to allow the reader to experience the emotions, fears, and spirit of the characters. Julie’s writing is beautiful, and while the big twists, that are in many of her
previous books, aren’t here; there are some unexpected events that I didn’t see
coming at all.
I love the end of the book.
It is satisfying and perfect for a duet.
Taking Turns isn’t for everyone. It explores kink a little more explicitly than
some people will like. Some parts of the
story shocked me. Surprisingly, not the
sex parts; those are kinky and hot but also loving. I’m shocked by the epilogue and anxious for the next book. If you can get past the edgy setting of a sex
club, Taking Turns is a must read.
Julie Huss continues to be my stop everything to read author.
