Chasing Eva is the first book in the In Light of Shadows series by Camellia Hart. The story has a very interesting romance
brewing and a slow build-up of suspense.
I just love it. I can’t really say that I am sitting on the edge of my
seat but I can feel the anxiety build to the point that it makes my belly
turn. That is good writing.
Evangeline (Eva) Avery is
suddenly pulled from her goal of owning her own restaurant to being at the helm
of S. F. Designs, an interior design firm that was number one in the field
before her father died. She is
determined to prove her father made the right decision turning everything over
to her. The item on her agenda is to
convince Clive Stanton to keep them on as the interior designer of his family’s
spas.
Clive Stanton is the media
darling’s playboy, successful businessman and doesn’t stay with a women for
more than one month. He isn’t looking
for love or commitment until he runs into Eva in the elevator in his
building. Eva is his teenage crush and
first kiss and the woman he let get away years ago.
Eva is attracted to Clive from
the first time she sees him in the elevator.
She is ready to settle down with a Mr. Right but doesn’t know where to
find him. She is cautious around Clive
regardless of the attraction. Avery
knows from experience how a cheater can ruin everything. She will not get involved with a man who is
only looking for a one-night stand—or will she if he can help her bottom line?
It is hard to believe that this
is a debut novel. The story is crafted
so beautifully that the reader can’t help but cheer for the couple. Both Eva and Clive are unsure of where their
relationship is going. They both make
mistakes along the way and try to learn from them.
The characters are multi-layered
personalities. Eva is a very strong
woman who will not give up. I totally
relate to her tenacious attitude and her loyalty to family and friends. Clive is the perfect male character for a
romance book. He is a successful, hot,
and often misunderstood alpha male. I
really like him. He has an interesting
past that adds to the character.
There are good support
characters too. Eva’s friends are good
to her and loyal. I’m a little put off
by Ali but there is always one in every crowd.
Izzy is the crazy member of the group.
Clive has a supportive family that add to the storyline. Trevor, Clive’s former partner is interesting
too. I can’t wait to see more of them.
I always get excited when I have
the opportunity to read the debut book of an author. It gives insight on the writer’s skills. It is also a baseline to compare as more
books are released. Camellia Hart has
great writing skills. I really like how
she is telling Eva’s story.
Chasing Eva leaves the reader
with unanswered questions but it doesn’t end with a cliffhanger. We leave Eva and Clive in a good place, I
have to thank Ms. Hart for that. The
couple is working on their relationship but there are hurdles ahead not only in
their relationship but also Eva’s business. In general, the book is fast past and holds the reader's interest.
There is also a mystery to solve
of what is really happening to Eva’s company.
Who is the real bad guy? Are the
clues thus far a red herring or is there sad news ahead. There really is something for everyone: a
budding romance, a possible murder mystery, and corporate espionage. What a fun and captivating read. I highly recommend starting this series. I can’t wait for book 2, Loving Eva. Book 2 and 3 are "coming soon" per Camellia's website. I don't see any dates yet.
