Joe sat
beside her on the couch. He turned sideways and threw an arm across the back. “Your
dad adores you. He used to go on and on about his bellissima to anybody who’d listen.”
Gianna
rolled her eyes. The way Pa bragged about her was embarrassing. Joe’s intense gaze
settled on her face, suddenly making Gianna aware that she wore only a T-shirt and
undies under his terry robe.
“How
come you’re not married?” he asked.
Gianna
raised her eyebrows. “What? A good, little Italian girl needs a big, strong man
to take care of her?”
He
cocked his head in reproof. He knew she didn’t really think that.
She
picked at the tie on her belt to buy some time. “I’ve been busy. With the
clinic, Pa’s website, and now with my company.” She looked at him, worried that
he’d think her totally lame and boring. “Past boyfriends were mostly doctors
too busy with their careers to want something serious.”
“Gianna.
You’re smart and gorgeous. You could have had any guy you wanted.”
But
none of them were you. You were taken.
Gianna shrugged off the uncomfortable thought. “I’d rather focus on my career.
I wanted something uniquely mine that I could be proud of. A serious
relationship just wasn’t in the life plan. What about you?”
“Tried
marriage and we know how that turned out, so I guess I’m following the same
life plan.”
Good
deflection. Gianna didn’t know how it’d turned out, exactly, other than that
Meggie had died in some freak shooting in Detroit. She knew how it had looked twice a year when she’d come home
from school. But it’d been too painful to be around the newlyweds, so she
didn’t really know what Joe’s marriage had been like. She’d ask Aunt Colleen
when she got back. Meanwhile… Meggie was gone and Joe was unattached.
“I’m
going to shower while you get dressed and think of a way to help Pat catch your
burglar. ’Cause until I know you’re safe, I’m gonna worry.”
Gianna
leaned forward as if she had a secret and waited for Joe to move his head close
to hers.
“You’re
gonna worry anyway, Pal,” Gianna whispered, before kissing him. Her mouth
landed on his like radar, and when his lips parted in surprise, Gianna flicked
her teasing tongue into his mouth.
Easing
back, Gianna smiled, bolted off the creaking couch through the door and up the
stairs.
