*** REVIEW *** CATALYST by Leighton Riley

For every action, there is a reaction.

People aren’t always who they say they are. Everyone has their secrets. Some are more evil than I ever thought imaginable.

I was left broken and alone after my boyfriend was murdered in my bar.

An old acquaintance moves into Liam’s home and a spark is ignited deep inside me.

Becoming vulnerable made me weak, and I never saw it coming.

When obsession takes over, lies and deceit can be killer.

Before I talk about the review I want to say that the marketing of this book piqued my interest right from the start.  We received a challenge to read a “mystery book” without knowing the author, title, etc.  What can I say--I couldn’t resist and I’m very happy I didn’t.

Catalyst is a suspense/thriller/mystery with an underlying romantic plot.  It grabbed me right from the start as Tinsley was grieving the murder of her fiancé, Liam.  Liam didn’t have a good relationship with his father and, dear old daddy, sold the house Tinsley lives in with Liam while she was still grieving.  There is a scene when the new owner comes in and Tinsley is trying to grab every memory she can before she leaves.  I cried like a baby.  This is so well written I could see the events unfold so clearly and emotionally.

Catalyst follows Tinsley’s journey of grieving and moving on with her life.  She has a tough time but with her two close friends, Noah and Shannon, she comes through.  In addition, there is the unsolved murder case on Tinsley’s mind.  Why aren’t the police telling her anything?  I have to admit I solved the murder case in a different way with every chapter until it became apparent who the murderer really is.

The mystery storyline is very emotional.  The reader knows that a murderer is out there and waiting to strike again.  Ms. Riley does a very good job of keeping the case in the reader’s mind while moving Tinsley through her grief.  The majority of the book is told from Tinsley’s point of view which allows the readers inside her head and emotionally connected to her.  There are a couple chapters from Maguire’s and Liam’s point of view too.

There are a couple big twists at the end that took me by surprise. I like how these were pulled off in a covert way.  My only criticism is the ending.  It is a good and satisfying ending it just feels incomplete or rushed to me.  I didn’t get a chance to wrap my heart around it is the best way that I can describe it.

Catalyst is the first book I’ve read by Leighton Riley.  She is a good storyteller.  If you like a little suspense with your romance, I recommend that you try Catalyst.
