Summer Jenkins. That’s me, a small town girl stuck in Quincy, Georgia. I cook some mean chicken and dumplins, can bluff a grown man out of his savings in poker, and was voted Most Friendly my senior year.
We were from different worlds. Our lives shouldn’t have collided. But then Cole Masten read a book about my small town. And six months later, his jet landed on our dusty airstrip, and he brought Hollywood with him.
From the start, I knew he was trouble. For our town. And for me.
Sometimes, opposites just aren’t meant to attract.
Stand-alone Contemporary Romance.
Hollywood Dirt isn’t the typical story that I expect from Alessandra
Torre but it is good story nonetheless.
It is a change of pace from the previous books in that it is lighter and
more romance however there is a little secret that unfolds with the story.
The story is set in Quincy, a small Georgia town, loaded
with the multi-generational uber rich thanks to smart investments in Coca-Cola
decades ago. Quincy is the picture of
southern living with small town gossip and a general distrust of outsiders. Low and behold this quiet little town has a
big adjustment to make when a Hollywood crew invades the peace and quiet to
make a movie.
In typical Torre fashion the characters are developed
wonderfully. I love the way the
beginning of the story shows the two main characters, Cole Masten and Summer
Jenkins, in their own environment. It
sets the theme by showing how different these two people are and how often
times opposites attract. Sparks fly,
both good and bad after they meet. It is
a bumpy road they travel as a relationship blossoms and grows.
Cole is an A list actor.
He lives his life in front of the
camera and paparazzi. There isn’t a
place around the world that his fans and media don’t stalk him. He has it all until his equally famous and
beautiful wife files for divorce. It shatters his heart and confidence.
"In
Hollywood a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk."
Summer Jenkins is the Quincy outcast. She wants out of Quincy but doesn’t have the
money to leave. She spends her time planning and escape. Summer is responsible for her mother; her
biggest hurdle to her escape--that is until she latches on to the movie’s location
scout. This connection is her
introduction to Cole and a part in the movie.
“It
only took eight minutes for my hero worship of Cole Masten to nose dive into a
sea of dislike.”
Cole and Summer’s story is told by alternating between
chapters told from Summer’s point of view to a third person point of view
observing Cole’s actions and life. It is
the perfect methodology to show these completely opposite personalities. Summer gives Cole a very interesting pet that
sets up a couple hilarious scenes.
What I really like about this book is that it doesn’t take
the well-worn path of small town girl meets big time star and falls instantly
in love and vice versa. No these two do
not fall in love at first sight; they have to work to even like each
other. These character from two diverse
cultures clash constantly in both touching and humorous interactions. Hollywood Dirt is a beautiful romantic comedy
that everyone needs to read.
As a side note: if you know Alessandra Torre’s previous books
you will recognize the character of Brad DeLuca divorce attorney from the
Innocence series. It is fun to have him
return.
