Anyone
who has read any of my previous reviews knows that I’m a sucker for second
chance romances. Second chance stories
gives the reader hope that a bad choice or decision can be rectified or
reversed. The only thing that makes the
story better is if the second chance has a little twist to it. Fading
Memories is a second chance romance with a twist so it goes without saying
I’m a fan.
Fading Memories is a tale of loss,
grief, determination, and moving forward.
Isabel Nichols, the main character, is an only child devastated by the
death of her father. To make this loss
even more emotional, her fiancé leaves her when she is so broken and grieving. Alone without any family Izzy finds herself
emotional and unable to shake off her depression. The story picks up a year after these events
and Isabel’s determination to make changes and finally try to move forward.
Dakota
Jackson is Isabel’s new neighbor. He is
a very attractive young man who immediately shows an interest in Izzy. From their first meeting he is obvious about
his desire to be friends and often hints that he wants more. There is also something that Dakota is
holding back and not ready to share with Izzy or anyone for that matter. The banter between Isabel and Dakota is
refreshing and fun.
The
story is well written. I started reading
Friday evening and finished the story the next day. Generally the book flows with such ease that
I never felt bored nor did I want to put it down for a break. The setting and story line are realistic; I
never felt myself giving an eye-roll or hand-wave.
The
characters are developed in a way that the readers wants to know everything
about them. I really like Dakota. He is very patient and kind. He is determined to help Izzy move forward
and put the recent past behind her. His
character, to me, feels more developed then Izzy is some ways. As I sit here thinking about the story I
think it is because I don’t understand some of Izzy’s reactions to Dakota’s
kindness and obvious deep feelings for her.
The
supporting characters are great. Kelsey,
Leah, and Joseph are Isabel’s close friends.
They have her best interest at heart and encourage her every step of the
way through her grief. Joseph is like a
brother in many ways. They are her
support group who tells it like it is. I
can see where any of these characters can spin-off in another book.
This is
the first book by A.M. Willard in my library but I’m sure it won’t be my
last. It has a little angst, engages the reader and
has a very sweet second chance theme. A great book to spend time with.
