Synopsis
Dying . . .
Dead . . .
Deceased . . .
It doesn’t matter how many times I say it or how many different names I give it, it still means the same thing. One of these days I’ll be nothing but a passing memory, a familiar face in a forgotten photo. But there's three things I need before this life of mine ends . . .
I need to tell him I love him more than life itself.
I need to feel the strength of his arms wrapped around me just one more night.
Most of all, I need him to forgive me.
Eight years ago I broke the heart of the only man I’ve ever loved and today I’m moving home in hopes that he’ll let me put it back together. I’m not sure how many breaths I have left, but I’ll use each and every last one fighting for what I destroyed.
My name is Laney Jacobs and this is my journey.
Excerpt
“I wish it was someone else,” she croaks, swallowing hard. “There are thousands of bad people in the world, but it happened to you.” I watch her eyes fill with tears and then I look away. It’s pathetic of me really; that I’m unable to look my best friend in the face when it’s obvious that she is struggling with this almost as much as I am. But I’ve cried my fair share of tears and although I’m certain my tear ducts have yet to dry up, I don’t want to cry tonight. Somehow I know that if I watch Mia break, then I’ll shatter right along with her.
“I’m glad it’s me.” She gasps, startled by my words, and I rush to try and explain. “If it wasn’t me, it would be someone else, and I would never wish this upon someone else. You know that saying that God will only give you what you can handle?”
She nods.
“Sometimes I tell myself that he just thinks I’m really strong and I can handle it, whereas someone else couldn’t.”
“Does that help?” she asks. “Does that make you feel better about it?”
“No, but it eases my mind. Sometimes when I’m having a good day, it brings me peace, however temporary it may be. But no, it doesn’t make me feel better.”
“Peace,” she whispers, seemingly trying the word on for size. “I want you to have peace.”
This is the second book in “A Touch of Fate” series. Don’t let that scare you away it can be a stand alone. I didn’t read the first book and,
while some of these characters were in the previous book but I never felt like
I missed something because I didn’t read the previous book.
Ms. Grayson knows how to tell a story and what a story she
tells here. This is a very emotional
story of love, loss, dealing with a sucker punch from life and a second
chance. I am the first to admit that I
won’t let anyone cry alone and that includes fictional characters. There are some moments in the story that just
crushed me. This is an absolutely
wonderful story of a fighter told perfectly.
As a cancer survivor there are many moments that struck me to the core.
Laney is the perfect heroine for me. She is strong, determined to face obstacles
head on and she can envision her dreams and works towards making them a
reality. Ever decision she makes isn’t
the right one but she doesn’t give up. Laney
really wants to be a chef and her dream is to go to California’s Culinary
Institute.
Levi is my kind of hero. He is strong but flawed. He is heartbroken when the woman he loves,
Laney wants to follow her dream and he doesn’t want her to leave because he
can’t see a way to make a long distance relationship work. As a result Levi refuses to travel down that
road of love again. He decides that he
prefers one-night stands to protect his heart.
My heart broke with Levi when he realizes Laney is determined to follow
her dreams and he says all the wrong things to her.
Eight years later Laney comes
home. She has a tremendous personal
battle to fight but she also wants to find a way to get Levi’s
forgiveness. Forgiveness is so important
to Laney that she keeps a secret from Levi because she is afraid that he will
forgive her out of pity and not love.
Laney needs Levi’s love.
I love the ancillary characters. These characters are great friends and I
suspect there is so much more to them. It would be great if they were spin off books of their own. I want to see
Mia and Benny’s story also Laney’s brother Luke and Levi’s brother Mason also
have a story to tell. However after Mia
and Benny I really want to know more about Quinn. Hopefully K.L. Grayson will hear these
characters talk to her and she will put their story on paper.
My only complaint is that the ending
wasn’t as satisfying as I expected.
After a really good story that flowed from one scene to the next the
ending seemed frustrating. I don’t understand
Mason at all. I get that Mason &
Levi are working on a good business deal that will change their life but come
on. Are you telling me that good
businessmen can’t wait a day or two when a woman you love is sick? Or, at the very least one brother couldn’t go
out of town and the other one Skype or use technology available. It really pissed me off. These brothers are supposed to love each other.
The epilogue is perfect. It is a beautiful ending to the story. I needed another chapter before the epilogue
though. For me there is a part of the story
missing and it upset me a little.
If you love a good second chance story
with some twists and turns and a lot of emotional highs and lows you will love
this book. I highly recommend it. In the meantime I’m going to go back and read
the first book in this series and hope for another book staring at least one of
the secondary characters.
