Kimberly Knight has been writing for a few years now but this
is the first time I’ve had the pleasure to read one of her books. The synopsis piqued my interest right away
and made me want to find out more about Autumn and Gabe.
The book is organized with a prologue, the meat of the story
and an epilogue. I’ll happily admit that
the prologue tugged at my heart strings and brought a tear to my eye then
pulled me into the story hard enough that I couldn’t but my Kindle down.
Capt. Gabe Hastings found his love when he was serving his
country. Yes, you guessed it Gabe is a
hot military man with a heart of gold. Alyssa
is his first real love and he wants more than quick getaways. Unfortunately
more isn’t what fate has in store for him and his love. Gabe promises himself that he is never going
to love again and turns to whiskey to drown his sorrows and his broken heart.
Autumn finds her true love, Richard Jones at work. He is perfect and after a whirlwind courtship
marries the man of her dreams.
Unfortunately her dreams become nightmares shortly after her
honeymoon. Her husband is very
controlling and she must do everything according to Richard’s plan or endure
his wrath.
After a chance meeting Gabe and Autumn meet and their
friendship grows as Gabe realizes he needs to protect Autumn.
The story is well written with a fast moving storyline. The hero and heroine are damaged but strong
characters. They have to go through a
lot to get to the point in their life where they can move on. Gabe is good to the women in his life but he
doesn’t want a relationship with any of them.
I love this character. He is a
hot alpha male but he has a big heart that he needs to protect. He can’t stand to have his heart broken
again.
Autumn also has a lot of growth to endure to get to the
point where she can strike back. This
character is well written and loveable.
She is stronger than she first appears and, with the help of Gabe, Paul
and, Brandi she comes up with a plan to get out of the nightmare she is living.
Paul and Brandi are the best friends of the H/h. They are good secondary characters that help
move the story forward. I like these
characters a lot.
There are a couple plot twists. Just when I am sure I know how the story ends…bam…it’s
not going there. Then a few chapters
later bam again and the story takes another unexpected turn. Both of these twists add to the story to make
it better.
Finally, the epilogue is the perfect ending. Beautiful!
If you need a break from cliffhangers and series this is a book to
try. It is a standalone. There are a few scenes where I wanted a
little more. They kept me from giving
five stars but these are minor annoyances.
This is a good book and worth reading.
