**** REVIEW *** Secret Santa - Jennifer Benson

I really like this book.  Let me start by telling everyone-- DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE TITLE!  The story wasn’t what I expected at all.   Yes it starts at an office Christmas party but it isn’t a Christmas story per se.  What it is, is a very HOT quick read that happens to start with a meeting at the Christmas party but it isn’t the predictable story that we often see this time of the year.

Olive Harper is tasked with organizing the office Christmas party for the law firm where she works.  She wants everything to be different this year.  The biggest difference is not having the party at a hotel where rooms are readily available for office hooks-ups at the end of the night.  She also invites spouses and significant others, making the party more family friendly.  At the end of the night, the party is a big success except one guest becomes very drunk and is found passed out after everyone, except Olive left.  The interaction between the country club manager and Olive is funny.  The passed out guest is Murphy Scott, the brother of the new partner that Olive doesn't know.  Olive can’t get in touch with anyone with the new partner’s phone number and takes Murphy home to sleep it off on her couch.

I really, really love the main characters in this story.  Olive Harper is the type of heroine that really appeals to me and makes me want to read more.  She is strong and secure in her career and her life.  She isn’t into committed relationships but she knows how to have fun and be a good friend.

Murphy Scott!  This is one hot, hot, hot alpha male with a great sense of humor.  He is a good friend and the kind of boss everyone wants.  I just loved everything about this guy.  He is a loving son and an attentive date.  I can’t think of anything negative to say about him.

The story switches from Olive’s to Murphy’s point of view. This is becoming a favorite technique for me.  We learn a lot about these two characters as we get in their head.  For me, switching the pov makes the story real and allows me connect emotionally with each character.

It is commendable that Ms. Benson didn’t take the story down a predictable path.  (I can’t really say too much because it will be a major spoiler.)  It suffices to say you will not be disappointed in the way the story plays out.  The couple runs into ups and downs as expected because they need to work through a long distance relationship.  The distance is fun because they have some really hot and fun sexting and skyping.  It is most enjoyable, sometimes funny and sometimes sexy but all the time entertaining.

This is my first Jennifer Benson book.  I enjoyed it so much I will definitely look for some more.  Secret Santa is a standalone book but I hope Ms. Benson writes some more about Murphy and Olive and/or the other members of the law firm.
