I was ordinary. Nice. He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice. Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t.

Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path. Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough.

Who wants to see some magic!
                                                                                                                                - Kes Donohue -

Well, in The Traveling Man, The Traveling Duet Part One, Jane Harvey-Berrick produces magic with each turn of the page. This is the first part of Kes Donohue and Aimee Andersen's story; it is a tale of a painful growing up, of children's inner strength, of  two worlds coming together, but above all, of love between two kindred spirits. Because Kes and Aimee SEE each other when they are only 10 years old and there's no distance in time or space that can keep them apart. This is not the usual narration of puppy love between teenagers, from the very beginning. this is love beyond borders.

Bookworm Aimee is living a lonely childhood in a dysfunctional family and only finds solace in reading her books, comfortably hidden up the hickory tree outside her house. Books allow her a much-needed escape from her reality and also hint at a life outside her narrow confines, a life full of promises and 'magic'. Each summer, a traveling circus stops in a field near her house; the Camelot Carnival, run by the Donohue family, sums up all of Aimee's  ideas of a thrilling, adventurous life, and the only thing she can think of is seeing the 'magic' of that little world popping up overnight once a year. Here, she meets Kes, and her life will no longer be the same Aimee is fascinated by Kes's lifestyle, so different from hers, yet similar to it in so many ways.
“I want to show you something,” he said. “Or are you too chicken?”

Kes challenges Aimee the Bookworm to try some tricks and, to her disappointment, reveals her the secret behind the magic: hard work and great performing skills. But Aimee has got her own 'magic' to reveal too. First with her reading Kes some of her books, then with her teaching him how to read despite his dyslexia, Aimee wins his heart. These two children are so different from each other, yet they complement each other in such a way they cannot but feel attracted to one another: while Aimee's intelligence is of the bookish type and channelled in her education, Kes's is all about physical prowess and  bodily confidence and he becomes the compass for Aimee to go through all things prohibited to her, From the very beginning,  Kes questions Aimee's parents' values and  shows her how much biased these can be. Aimee is clever enough, though, to see it is the other way round too.

Through a painful alternation of dull, bleak weeks spent waiting for 'her Kes' to come back to her, and the colorurful,  intense fifteen days when he eventually arrives with all his lively crew,   10 turns into 16. They are no longer little kids and their friendship moves to the next step in such a natural way, it would be every teenager's dream come true. Kes and Aimee are totally wrapped up in their hearts' contentment and bodily bliss, until reality breaks into their happy bubble and makes them go back to their own separate worlds. But there is no way  soulmates cannot find eache other

Eight years later, we found a now 24-year-old Aimee struggling in a relationship that's going nowhere. Just when things couldn't get worse, Destiny plays the Ace up her sleeve and brings Kes back into Aimee's life. All is well in the world you might think. After a bumpy start, Kes and Aimee take their chance at love again. Aimee agrees to spending her summer holidays traveling with Kes and his carnival. She tries to fit in, to make herself useful  with the running of the stalls, Kes is her dream-man come true, 'her Kes' has turned her world into an earthly Paradise:
                                               “This is Heaven”.
“I've got you, got the carnival  -  works for me.”

But even in Heaven there might be troubles, and they can all be summed up in one word: Responsibility. Aimee is crushed between her love for Kes and her job as a teacher in Boston. What's worse, Kes is keeping secrets from her, of all people. Their love seems to no longer be enough to keep them together and their worlds keep pushing them apart.
I can't wait to see how Aimee and Kes are going to sort things outside their bubble out.

Is the second book The Traveling Woman out already???????

I lived in London for over 10 years and have a love affair with New York. It's only since I have moved to the countryside, that the words have really begun to flow. I live in a small village by the ocean and walk my little dog, Pip, every day. It’s on those beachside walks that I have all my best ideas.
