Beats by Kendall Grey ~ Sarah's Review

WARNING: BEATS is specially formulated for horn dogs, porn oglers, smut peddlers, BDSM junkies, M/M and M/M/F addicts, DP dabblers, and lovers of A2M backdoor sexy times. If you don’t fall into these categories, can’t stomach hot man-on-man action, or if you have no idea what the above acronyms mean, please back away from BEATS now. This isn’t the book you’re looking for. Failure to heed this warning could inadvertently throw unauthorized users into a persistent vegetative state, or at the very least, require administration of a defibrillator to the chest and/or groin area. Nobody wants that.

For months, shy drummer Jinx Hardwick has been silently crushing on her tall, dark, and scary bandmate, Toombs Badcock. Drawn to his frightening ink and scars, she yearns to uncover the shadowy secrets lurking behind his silver eyes, but Jinx is too intimidated to even look at him, let alone talk to him. When she stumbles upon Toombs and their manipulative lead guitarist Rax in a compromising position, Jinx realizes her chances of winning Toombs’s heart aren’t just a long shot—they’re nonexistent. To make matters worse, Jinx’s family needs her at home. She’s about to back away from it all—Toombs, the band, her dreams of fame and fortune—when Rax makes her an offer she can’t refuse: a no-holds-barred night alone with Toombs. There’s one small catch. She has to go through Rax to get it.

Book two in the Hard Rock Harlots series was a little more in my wheel house than Strings.  It had a little more of the darkness that I tend to be drawn to.  Not a lot though, and definitely nothing that overshadows the smuttiness of the book.  This review may be a bit spoilery if you haven't read Strings.

Beats is Jinx/Gianna story.  For those of us who have read Strings we know that she has a bit of a thing for Toombs and that he might be interested in her as well.  However we also know that there is something between Toombs & Rax.  Letty knows that Jinx is into Toombs and decides to 'coach' her in the ways of winning over a man.  I'm sure that you can imagine the kind of advice that Letty would dispense.  It is all pretty hilarious, but there is actually a lot of great advice laced in with the crazy.  Quite honestly this book would have been far too intense without Letty's comic interludes.

Jinx is pretty shy and a little insecure, especially in relation to Letty.  But seriously, who wouldn't be!?  She is more reserved and shy.  She seems to have a gentle and caring soul.  She is the kind of girl that you want to be your best friend.  She is going to be there to help you no matter what, but in private she is going to have some wild sex tips for you.  Who doesn't want a friend like that!?
Toombs is nearly silent most of the time.  Rax is definitely the mouthpiece of their duo.  However the more that we get to know of Toombs, it is quite apparent that what you see is definitely not what you get with him.  I don't want to say more for fear of leaking spoilers.

I really wanted to hate Rax, and there were times that I almost did, but I couldn't quite drop over the precipice of hatred for him.  It is quite evident that he has a whole mess of his own problems to deal with beyond the relationship with Toombs, but that is a whole other story, better left to tell at a different time.

The plot of Beats almost exclusively deals with the private lives of Jinx, Toombs, & Rax.  There are little bits of the band and the tour thrown in but it was not the driving force as much as it was in Strings.  There was so much story to tell with just that there was really no need for anything more.  We did get to see a little bit of Jinx' family, which also helped propel the relationships forward, and it was nice to get to see a little glimpse of what Jinx' 'real' life was like.

By the time that I was done with the book I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on Jinx.  She was fabulous.  I really would like to be her friend, not even joking.  I would have liked to know more about Toombs.  We got little glimpses here and there but I wanted more, what can I say, I'm greedy!!

Beats is another hot read.  Definitely not for the faint of heart.  If you read the warning and have any thought of being offended, back away quickly.  For you other dirty smut-fans pick this up, it is a really well written plot-driven smut novel.  It isn't really a cliffhanger, we know exactly where all of the relationships end, but there is definitely huge question marks concerning one of the characters.

Kendall Grey, word wrangler, whale warrior, wicked wench, and lover of tongue-tripping alliteration, was born without an off-switch between her brain and mouth. She's been called the "Flux Capacitor of Twitter" (@kendallgrey1) and "A little package of love all wrapped up in F-word paper," but she's really just a maniacal writer relaying eyewitness accounts of the rave inside her head. She writes urban fantasy with strong romantic elements and also dabbles in erotica and horror on occasion.

Kendall lives off a dirt road near Atlanta, Georgia, but don't hold that against her.
