Author Week ~ Jodi Ellen Malpas ~ Fan Interview

FAN INTERVIEW

Was there a certain event in your life that made you want to write and publish a book or was something you always wanted to do? What gave you the courage to do so?

No event in particular, maybe just the hum-drum of normal life. Women lose themselves in a novel written by someone else, I lost myself in my own story. It was just for me. Not anymore, though.

Who was your muse for Jesse and Ava's characters?

When writing, they existed only in my mind’s eye. Since the books have become so popular, I have received thousands of pictures of men who women claim to be ‘their Jesse’. There’s one man in particular who is very close to my Jesse, but I’ll never say who that may be. I think it’s important for my readers to have their own ideal. My Jesse might not be their Jesse.

Would you do a Jesse pov for all 3 books?

I know, I know! I’ve written seven Jesse POV scenes. Four are available on my website (links below) and three have been written for the publication of the paperbacks – one for each of the three novels. I’m fully aware of the popularity, but for now I’m taking a Jesse break. He’s just as exhausting to write about as he must be to read about. So, in answer, I never say never, but I’m making no promises. I have so many other stories to tell.

Do you have any characteristics that are similar to the book's character Ava?

Too many.

How long were Jesse and Ava running around in your head before you committed them to paper?

It was knocking on two years before I finally sat down and hammered the story out.

Do you have a muse when you write?

A Jesse muse? Refer to question 2!

Do you write to music?

I don’t write to music, but if I’m struggling with a scene, I’ll take a break and listen to the track assigned to that particular scene. Anyone who has read the books will know my passion for music. I find tracks that enhance the emotions of a scene and I would always encourage a reader to listen to the music mentioned as it really puts you there.

What famous celeb would you most like to have breakfast with?

Elizabeth Taylor. I’d love to hear her stories of passion and love.

How did you come up with the rowing boat scenario?

The rowing machine? Ha! In that scene, Ava looks around the gym for what might be on Jesse’s mind, and I mentally did the same. Slide and hit sprung to mind as soon as I saw an image of a rowing machine.

What made you think to do a book like this man and will there be a book 4?

The whole story in my head was coming from Ava’s perspective, but it was totally based around Jesse – completely. I called him ‘This Man’ in my head for a long, long time. It’s simple and apt.

Is The Manor real?

Quite possibly, who knows?!

If you'll be given the chance to have a movie adaptation of the This Man trilogy, who would you like to play as Jesse Ward? And why?

If that ever happens, I’d be truly stumped. There is no actor that immediately springs to mind, especially not a British actor.

Who did your cover design?

For THIS MAN, I told my son what I wanted and he created it. Good, isn’t he?! He wants royalties. The calla lily has become very iconic.

What was your favorite scene to write?

Impossible question to answer! I enjoyed every moment of writing the books.

Where did the different type of "fucks" come from?

It started with the ‘Sense’ and spiralled from there. Jesse has a fuck for everything!

Did you have the entire story planned when you published the first book?

Yes, I’d started THIS MAN CONFESSED when I published THIS MAN. From the beginning of writing, I knew who Jesse was, where he’d been and where he was going.

Why lace Jodi?

Lots and lots of lace! Every woman should wear lace, for no other reason than it’s feminine and beautiful.

Any other books in progress at the moment?

That’s a secret ;-)

How have these books changed your life?

Beyond comprehension. I wrote the story for me. It was my perfect, Jesse was my perfect, imperfect man. I dared not dream about what could be. The last year has blown my mind.

Where did you start? With one specific scene or at the beginning?

I started at the beginning. I wrote the whole story in sequence as it was all very clear to me. Obviously, if something popped into my head then I made notes in my journal with key elements that I didn’t want to forget.

Have you ever had a writer`s block? If yes, what did you do?

Yes, not because I don’t know what to write, but because I’m trying to get to a certain point. When writing THIS MAN and BENEATH, I was mindful that I didn’t want to have any draggy lulls. I could make this book just how I’d like a story to be - fast moving, with interesting characters and a chunky read. I like long books that hold my attention, something to get my teeth stuck into. On the rare occasion I get writer’s block, it’s when I’m ‘filling’ between significant parts of the story.

Your favorite movie?

The Goonies. Sad but true. It reminds me of my childhood. I also love Notting Hill.

What is the worst or most annoying interview question you have ever been asked?

Not so much annoying, more silly. Before CONFESSED was released, I was asked what happens in it??!!

Where's your favorite place to write?

On my bed.

Who is your favorite book boyfriend?

Stupid question! Jesse Ward.

How did you come up with the names for the trilogy?

They are simple and very apt. I love the titles.

AUTHOR BIO

First time British author Jodi Ellen Malpas was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, where she lives with her family. Working for her father’s construction business fulltime, she tried to ignore the lingering idea of This Man until it became impossible. She made time and found the courage to release her creative streak, unleashing the character Mr Jesse Ward, Lord of The Manor.

Jodi took a chance on a story with some intense characters and exploded onto the self-published author scene at the end of October 2012, sparking some incredible reactions from women all over the world. Within two months of self-publishing This Man, Jodi made the decision to leave her day job to concentrate on her new and very unexpected career in writing.

The second installment of the This Man Trilogy, ‘Beneath This Man’ was published in January 2013 and fast became an Amazon Bestseller, holding #1 position in the chart of its genre for many weeks in both the US and UK. Now the anticipation for the third and final part of the trilogy, ‘This Man Confessed’, is rife and will be published July 2nd 2013 by Grand Central Publishing.
