Blurb

Life isn’t promised, love isn’t easy, and relationships aren’t always clean, but everyone has their soulmate who is willing to forgive when it would be better to forget.

Trevor “Tank” Trumbolt

I never thought in the blink of an eye my life could change, but it did. Cresting a hill driving to my favorite fishing spot, I was hit head-on by a teenager with no regard for anyone’s life but his own.

The recovery process has been hard, painful, and damn near beating me down.

The bright spot? Blaze.

Surviving the wreck has given me a second chance to make a life with her. Not knowing if I’ll ever be able to rejoin the Moonshine Task Force again has brought my world into focus. It’s made me realize what’s important.

Blaze. Stella. My brothers. My sister.

The ego that ran Blaze away before isn’t here any longer. What’s left is a man who’s holding his heart in his hands and a burning hope that once I’m healed she’ll still be around.

Daphne “Blaze” Coleman

There’s only been one person in the world who’s accepted me for who I am - from the fiery red of my hair and vibrant tattoos covering parts of my body to the smartness of my mouth and my desire to be matched in the bedroom.

That man is Trevor Trumbolt. When he asked me to give up my job as an EMT because he saw the dangers I face one scary afternoon, it spelled the end for us.

Now that he’s been injured, he needs my help and my love. I’ll give it all freely, but in the end I’m gonna need him to understand one thing about relationships. The give and take, love and sadness, pleasure and pain is a two-way street. He’s either in this with me or he’s not, but at the end of the day, I won’t let him boss me around.

If there’s anything that can handle the steel of a tank – it’s the heat of a blaze.

Tank is the second book in Laramie Briscoe’s Moonshine Task Force series.  I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to receive an advance review copy of this book.  I am falling in love with the characters in particular and the series overall.

Tank is the story of Trevor “Tank” Trumbolt (Whitney’s brother in Renegade) and Daphne “Blaze” Coleman.  Tank picks up in the parallel universe of the Moonshine Task Force with Trevor and Blaze working through the after effects of Tank’s automobile accident and the impact it has on Blaze when she turns out to be the EMT on-call.

Tank is a strong, alpha character who puts his life on the line regularly as a police officer and member of the Moonshine Task Force.  Tank’s relationship with Blaze is up in the air because of an ultimatum he issued asking her to choose him and her job.  In a matter of seconds, Tank realizes that even off-duty accidents can happen and life is often too short to be without the person you love.

Daphne Coleman is the daughter of “The Colemans” of Alabama.  Her family has expectations for Daphne that don’t include the life she has as an EMT doing “the work of the help” and riding in an ambulance all day.  Blaze doesn’t care.  This career is what she wants.  It is rewarding and makes her feel valuable to the community.  She doesn’t want to be phony like the rest of her upper-crust family.  Daphne knows that Tank is the man for her, but she isn’t sure that they can resolve their differences where her job is concerned.

Again Ms. Briscoe uses alternating points of view to allow the reader to understand what is in the minds and hearts of the main characters.  What I like is how these two characters come together by offering olive branches to each other to bridge the gaps in their relationship.  Tank is another realistic look at the steps a couple must take to talk through their concerns and fears.  The dialog is engaging, fun, and adult.

Another aspect of the story that I enjoy is how Ms. Briscoe revisits the characters from the previous book and updates the reader on their status.  The reader also gets a glimpse of the couple who will be the focus of the next book in the series, Havoc and Leighton.  It is a good thing we have a three-day weekend because I started Tank as soon as I finished reading Renegade.  I couldn't put the books down.  I love the way each book has a satisfying ending while stirring anticipation of more to come.  Come on Havoc. I, for one, can’t wait for more.

 RENEGADE
A few weeks ago, I received an advance review copy of Tank, the second book in the Moonshine Task Force series by Laramie Briscoe.  I also received a copy of Renegade, the first book in this series.  Both books will stand on their own, however, I believe it is better to read them all and get to know the entire task force and their history.  I am certainly pleased I read both books because I love the characters and want to know more about them.

Renegade is the story of Ryan “Renegade” and Whitney.  Whitney is Ryan’s best friend’s (Trevor) older sister.  Ryan has nursed a crush on Whitney for years since his teens to be exact.  As years pass Ryan goes in the military and Whitney marries an abusive jerk.  Now they are both free and stateside when Ryan runs into Whitney getting drunk with the goal of getting laid.  It is no surprise that Ryan steps up to help her out.

Slowly, Whitney is getting back to her old more confident self.  After her husband had beaten her down, she lost a lot of her vibrancy and sureness.  With her close friend Addison, they are building a Wedding/Events planning company that takes off.  With the success of her business reinforcing her belief in herself she wants to get back out on the dating scene.  Her big step into an attempt at a one-night stand with Ryan gets her pregnant—an entirely unexpected event as she thought she couldn’t have a baby naturally.

Ryan comes from a very unstable home life.  Fortunately, Whitney’s family always showed him what real family love and support should be.  He wants to make a life with Whitney, but he is hesitant to offend his best friend and his family.  At the same time, Ryan knows what he wants, and he wants Whitney.  He also must overcome Whitney’s fear of their age difference.   Ryan is a total southern gentleman who pulls back his need to be in control to allow Whitney to set the pace for the relationship to progress.

Laramie Briscoe does a good job balancing the joys and challenges of developing a relationship with a friend’s sibling and dating an older woman.  She manages to avoid the common pitfalls of constant arguments about age and the endless unrealistic push/pull I find in many romance novels.  Instead, she focuses on the damage that an abusive husband inflicted on his wife and the changing attitudes of a man who loves her.  It is a joy to see how Whitney comes into her own and grabs another chance at love and life with Ryan’s help.

The alternating points of view work well in telling the story.  Hearing the inner thoughts, frustrations, and struggles of both main characters make them real.  I didn’t feel that there were a lot of the predictable story arcs.  Instead, the age difference is discussed like adults.  In fact, I enjoy that communication is the key to the character and relationship development in the story.  There are a couple of secrets, but they aren’t constantly in the forefront.  Instead, we see a couple share their history and secrets gradually as they learn to trust one another.

Like the other books I read by Ms. Briscoe, Renegade, moves at a steady pace.  Once I start reading, I can’t put the book down.  Not only that, as soon as I finish I started the second book in the series Tank.  I love the characters, their development, and the sound plot is executed perfectly.  I can’t wait to read more about the Moonshine Task Force.
